TRENDING NOW: Emerging Strength & Adoption of HDBaseT

In a previous issue of “Be Tech Savvy”, we highlighted the emerging strength and proliferation in the adoption of HDbaseT connectivity. According to announcements made at the Integrated Systems Europe (ISE) 2014 show in Amsterdam, HDBaseT connectivity has taken a giant leap forward. Dozens of manufacturers introduced HDBaseT-compliant products, making the technology as close to a standard as it can be. Some AV industry experts predict that a year from now, unless a product is HDBaseT-compliant, it will NOT be spec’d into any new installation. With its ability to transport content over greater distances and superior stability of content integrity, HDBaseT continues to be the natural choice over HDMI. The time to consider upgrading is now! A key Century AV supplier, NEC, is offering two flat screens with only an HDBaseT connection. Contact Century Audio Visual. Allow us help you continue to future-proof your AV equipment investment.

How to Motivate Your Team in the Face of Organizational Change

Organizations are changing. As people acclimatize to the constant ebb and flow of change, they become tired, stressed and apathetic. As leaders, the goal is to inspire and motivate people, helping them to embrace change while maintaining their daily work. Convincing employees of the need for change is only part of the battle. Leaders must visibly endorse the case themselves. According to a recent Eagle Hill survey, employees need two things from managers in order to successfully accept and adopt change: effective communication and strong, visible leadership. Leaders must clearly and regularly communicate the vision and what is driving it. Seeking and using feedback, participating in events supporting the change and celebrating short term wins all help motivate your team around the change vision. The importance of leading by example cannot be overstated. Looking for an extra tip on how best to communicate during change? When surveyed, employees preferred in-person communication over email 4 to 5, regardless of their generation. Individual and team meetings will increase the chance of change adoption and your team’s satisfaction once the change has been implemented.

ANOTHER CONNECTIVITY TECHNOLOGY? …AND IT’S FUTURE PROOF?

Imagine adding technology to your AV system ensuring high performance, reliability and support of legacy devices while being affordable, scalable and future-proof. HDBaseT 2.0 enabled devices may be just the solution for you! In August 2013, the HDBaseT Alliance released version 2.0 of HDBaseT, a connectivity technology standard for transmission of uncompressed data. Version 2.0 features point-to-multipoint connectivity, multi-streaming and switching. It allows for one inexpensive cable to transmit video, audio, Internet, power and controls from AV components to displays, eliminating cabling distance concerns. Power outlet location is no longer a concern, nor is the cable / power bar mess that can mar the design look of your AV system. Valens, the HDBaseT™ technology developer, now makes chipsets for companies such as Kramer, Crestron and Alton. Contact Century AV today! Let us help you continue to enhance and future-proof your AV investment.

EMAIL ETIQUETTE: WHAT EVERY PROFESSIONAL NEEDS TO KNOW

In today’s business world, so much of our time is spent sifting through hundreds of emails. Ever find yourself wondering what the topic is or why you received the email? Often the answer is not obvious. How can we be more effective email communicators? A clear and succinct subject line will motivate the reader to open your email. Saying, “Need to meet with you today” is far more effective than “Re: our meeting”. Another tip is to change the subject line each time the purpose of the email changes. For example, sometimes we work with others to finalize documents. Use the subject line to update the reader on the action to be taken. “Client Proposal Version 2.0 – please review client comments page 2”, tells the reader exactly what you need them to do, saving them time. Lastly, before you click on ‘reply all’, ask yourself: what value are you adding by copying everyone? As you continue to hone your email etiquette, others may, too. The result will be a more manageable inbox and maybe even a little more time for YOU!

BEYOND THE TOPIC: THE SECRET TO AUDIENCE ENGAGEMENT

When presenting, we all want to captivate our audience, to ensure our topic is not only conveyed but understood. Ironically, the secret to holding audience interest is to occasionally focus on anything but the topic! What your audience needs to absorb your message is COMFORT. One suggestion is to break longer presentations into 20 minute segments. Participants report higher levels of enjoyment, better short term recall and longer term retention of the information presented. To switch the presentation focus, implement a 2-5 minute body awareness break. To reduce eye and neck strain, suggest participants look away from the projector screen, focusing on an area several feet away. Ask them to close their eyes, massage the eye area, slowly looking left to right, up, then down. If working on computer screens while attending your presentation, suggest audience members adjust the top of the screen so that it sits at eye level.  To increase energy, ask the audience to stand during the break. Standing increases heartbeats which results in increased neural firing and therefore energy. How can Century Audio Visual further support you in maintaining audience comfort? Sightlines, angles of view and audience placement are part of our AV design specialty.  Call us today! Let us use our expertise in the science of AV design to increase your audience engagement!

How Ready is Your Business? New Anti-Spam Law in Effect July 1, 2014

Consider yourself a spammer? You may be surprised! According to Canada’s Anti-Spam Law, many of your daily business activities will soon be subject to new rules. Simple things like sending an emailed newsletter to your clients, operating your website or installing a computer program on a device may contravene the new rules. CASL legislation may require your business to make significant changes to how you send or access commercial electronic messages. Non-compliance can result in significant fines and/or private action by any member of the public who believes he or she has been impacted. At Century Audio Visual, we are working diligently to prepare for CASL. We understand this complex topic can seem overwhelming. To learn more about CASL and how to ready your business for compliance, a visit to the government of Canada’s CASL website may be helpful: http://fightspam.gc.ca/eic/site/030.nsf/eng/home.

making CASL “opt-in” easy: A SPECIAL EMAIL WILL BE SENT SOON.

With the new CASL legislation, gone will be the days when you could simply include an unsubscribe mechanism in an email marketing campaign. CASL requires “opt-in” consent.  To prepare for CASL we will soon invite you, our valued clients, to “opt-in” so that you can continue to receive our electronic communications such as this client educational newsletter, quotations, invoices, etc. Watch for our special email notice on the CASL subject where you can select the link and “opt-in”. Century Audio Visual sincerely appreciates your support in this effort.

THE TECHNOLOGY CAN’T HOLD US: PAVING OLD WITH NEW

Incredible but true: we are no longer limited by the technological age of your audio visual equipment! Century Audio Visual has a wide scope of interface products that we can economically deploy to modernize your room AND future proof your technology. How do we achieve this? We transmit new technologies over the cabling of old. In some cases, we actually use your existing wire to pull new CAT5e, 6 or 7 cable, which allows us to transmit, well, almost anything! This ‘paving’ method can represent significant savings to you, our valued clients. It enables us to easily upgrade your technology without having to pull multiple video lines to your new or existing HDMI capable projector/TV. A simple upgrade would be extending VGA, Audio & HDMI over a single Quad shielded 23AWG cat 6 cable to one HDMI feed to your Projector/TV. Your existing projector, likely only VGA and audio equipped, can easily be upgraded to an HDMI capable unit. You now have the luxury of multiple wall input sources via the new wall/table port, mentioned above. All users with newer or older notebooks that are HDMI or VGA dependent are now able to use your technology for presenting/education purposes. Contact Century Audio Visual today. Learn how this new technology can improve the functionality of your existing equipment at a fraction of the cost!

Better Business Communication: What are Your Needs? We Want to Know!

At Century Audio Visual, we have a passion for technology and how it makes the world of communication more efficient and exciting. Whenever we learn something new in the AV realm, we are bursting at the seams, ready to share so that you may benefit! So, we got to thinking…why not ask you, our valued clients: what are you passionate about? What are your needs? What challenges affect you and therefore may affect YOUR clients? Perhaps you are curious about potential services that might complement your communication strategy. Email Century Audio Visual today at century@centuryav.com.  We encourage you to share your thoughts, questions or ideas. Our goal is to make “Be Tech Savvy” and our ongoing seminar series meaningful to you, your business and your bottom line.

REVITALIZING YOUR ROOM WITH ATLONA PRODUCT SOLUTIONS

Considering an upgrade or revitalizing your audio visual equipped room? One of the products that we integrate successfully to retrofit audio visual rooms is manufactured by Atlona. Atlona’s ATHDVSTXWP CAT5E Extender Transmitter Wallplate has both HDMI and VGA input technologies. Utilizing the ‘paving’ method described above, existing in-wall cables are used to pull a new CAT5, 6 or 7 cable. At the projector/TV end we install another Atlona unit. This box acts as the receiver, giving us a single HDMI out to your new or existing projector, eliminating the need to switch input sources at the monitor level. Another great feature of these products is that they possess the capability to detect an input and can command your projector/TV to turn on and off.  The result is less bulb replacements or burn in to your AV system and a simple “plug and play” experience for the end user.  Call Century Audio Visual today. Let us help you get your audio visual equipped room retrofit ready!

SMARTPHONE TO DISPLAY CONNECTIVITY:  HELLO, WIRELESS!

Imagine being able to walk around a room with a portable device untethered from any cables. The phone’s screen magically appears on the big screen at the front of the room.  No, this is NOT a dream!  Miracast brings us the next step in the new reality of wireless mobile device integration.  Based on Intel’s WiDi wireless display technology, Miracast uses an 802.11ac radio link, much like Google’s Chromecast and Apple’s AirPlay. Unlike Chromecast and Apple’s AirPlay, Miracast does not connect to the network switch. It’s a direct, peer-to-peer connection between the source and display. As businesses grapple with BYOE (Bring Your Own Everything!), user needs and existing network security make casual device integration highly impractical. Miracast’s peer-to-peer connection makes it ideal for deployment in institutional and commercial settings. Look for Miracast technology-enabled devices and displays or simply use an HDMI or USB Miracast adaptor to make your sending device compatible. Contact Century Audio Visual today! Learn how this explosive new technology can increase your business flexibility, reduce your cabling/switch equipment costs and help you better manage bandwidth.

SHARE WITH YOUR TEAM! NEXT IN OUR FREE SEMINAR SERIES…

Bill Dennis, an expert in culture, generations, and personality style training, will guide you through strategies and provide “competitive edges” to achieve success working with the increasingly diverse demographic in today’s challenging business world. How can your organization realize the greatest benefit from this seminar? Share this invitation with colleagues in job-related positions, such as sales, business development or H.R., etc.  The training is targeted towards those whose goal is to develop better awareness of cultural and generational differences and apply that insight into being successful working with a wide variety of people. From Sound to Sight: Dolby Digital Launches Dolby Vision

World famous pioneer in sound quality, Dolby Laboratories, has announced its move into display technology. Committed to elements essential for the best entertainment experiences, Dolby Vision aims to improve brightness, colour and contrast of Ultra HD displays. Current display technology can’t show detail in the dark and bright parts of the screen at the same time. As well, colour-grading and display technology is based on standards created for cathode-ray displays. These standards require original content to be altered, reducing the brightness, range of colours and contrast before it can be reproduced for transmission and playback.
Dolby Vision aims to address these issues and more. It promises to take the viewer experience to new heights, allowing us to see images as close to how we see them in the real world. Instead of looking at a display, it will feel like you are looking through a window. Expect Dolby Vision displays in the retail market late 2014. Added bonus? Netflix will stream videos in this new standard. Call Century Audio Visual to help keep you up to date on this exciting new technology!

THE NEW CONNECTIVITY STANDARD IN AV EQUIPMENT

The AV signals that travel through cables known as internet, HDMI, optical audio, power, RCA audio and both RS-232 and USB control cables are poised to be replaced by a new signal protocol called HDBaseT; also referred to as DIGITAL LINK and DIGICAT. The protocol allows uncompressed HD Video up to 4K, 100w of power, controls, audio and Ethernet to be transmitted over a single inexpensive Cat5e or greater LAN cable up to a distance of 100m. AV Systems Installations will benefit from substantial cost and time savings by running single Cat5e (or greater) cable for project interconnects such as digital signage networks or equipping a conference room with an HDBaseT enabled projector or display.  The list of leading edge manufacturers who have signed on to the protocol is long. Century Audio Visual has received confirmation from many key suppliers such as Kramer Electronics and NEC, who, coupled with our expertise, will allow us to fulfill all of your HDBaseT enabled technology needs in the near future.

KEEPING VIDEO CONFERENCING SIMPLE & COST EFFECTIVE

In its beginnings, Video Conferencing functioned in a very simple form.  Technology, in its inherent penchant to enhance and do more, has found a way to make this communications tool increasingly more complex.  Defining the actual needs of the typical user versus the concept that what is possible, technically, must be developed is well worth the analysis. Sometimes it isn’t necessary to make things more expensive, powerful and complex.  You may be surprised to learn that enhanced product features and user happiness do not always positively correlate.  We highly recommend reading the article "Keeping Video Conferencing Simple." http://cp.wainhouse.com from Dec.13, 2013.  A perfect match to Century Audio Visual philosophy, the article clearly outlines the benefits of deploying a solution that is simple, effective and truly reflective of the user’s needs.

the av equipped meeting room:  a good time for a fresh start

Start off your new year RIGHT!  Ensure that there are no hindrances to the effective use of your AV equipped meeting room.  Over the past year, “Be Tech Savvy” has alerted you to new challenges around interconnecting your AV equipment with outside devices.   As notebook, tablet and smartphone users increase their demand to interconnect with your visual display equipment, your need to upgrade your existing VGA port by adding at the least, an HDMI port, will also increase.  New interconnectivity will allow content from these devices to display on your meeting room screens.  This makes smartphones even more attractive as an output source.  The time for a systems interconnectivity review is now with different options emerging on the market. Your AV systems accessibility needs to be ready for today’s notebooks that only have HDMI outputs and the new porting requirements for data coming from smart devices. Ask Century AV to future-proof your AV room connectivity, keeping your presentation technology sustainable and relevant.

Sometimes, when we re-work the audio visual equipment in a room, minor repairs are required.   A ceiling bulkhead, impeding the projection from projector to screen, may need to be moved.  When we remove redundant gear, the original installation holes in your drywall may become visible.  Or, perhaps your installation was temporary.  You are now left with the task of quickly restoring your room to its original condition.  Need a professional drywall finisher to complete the project?  Look no further.  Century AV is here for you!  Our techs can do much more than just the technical component of an installation.   They have the skill and pride of workmanship to restore your walls to their former glory.  Rest assured:  your project will be completed in a professional manner with minimal intrusion to your business.  Contact Century AV today.  We have the talent within our team to cover all of your project needs.
