MASS NOTIFICATION SYSTEMS:  UPDATE FOR RISK MANAGERS

History has shown that unexpected tragedy, brought on by either human or natural forces, directly impacts public safety and security.  Mass Notification Systems (MNS) can help protect lives, informing people that an emergency exists and what immediate action they need to take.  As Canada continues to harmonize MNS protocol with that of the U.S., we can expect to see changes to building code requirements for alarm systems in the next year.  What does this mean for Canadian businesses?  A key component to conveying the urgency of an emergency message is clear, concise and consistent communication to those who are at risk.  Impending changes to the code may impact how you plan for your company’s emergency communication systems.  P.A. systems that are not intelligible enough to guide people in an emergency situation may put you, those within your building and your company at risk.  Contact your speech intelligibility experts at Century AV.  TOA Canada, our provider of choice, is a world leader in professional and commercial sound and security product manufacturers.  Utilizing the TOA Canada line of Mass Notification and emergency paging products, we will work with your risk assessment staff to plan proactively for changes in your emergency communication needs.

A SIGN OF THE TIMES:  THE EVER CHANGING FACE OF DISPLAY DEVICES

“The End of An Era”.  “Another One Bites the Dust”.  These are the captions you will find surrounding the topic of Panasonic “pulling the plug” on its last plasma television manufacturing plant.  Though well reviewed and highly favoured, Panasonic’s plasma could not compete with LCD displays that were increasingly comparable in size, quality and price making the LCD ‘good enough’ in the eyes of the consumer.  Move over, Panasonic.  Mitsubishi is following suit.  In a recent letter from the president to its dealers, Mitsubishi announced immediate global withdrawal from the front-projector and large-format monitor markets.  Analysts’ predictions of a decline in the projector market and high R&D costs with eroding profitability led to the decision to divert R&D funds to Mitsubishi’s profitable sectors, such as super narrow bezel and display wall cubes.  It appears a pattern is emerging, with another market shift toward LCD display.   You may want to consider a shift of your own in future, from projector to flat screen display.  Contact Century AV today and we can help you evaluate your decision from an investment perspective.  As usual, we are keeping a laser-like focus on your current and future project needs!

IP ROUTED VIDEO:  THE EXCITEMENT OF INNOVATIVE TECHNOLOGY!

In July, 2013 (Be Tech Savvy #47), we featured IP Routed Video technology, or video conferencing that combines long distance transmission of audio AND video, supported by your existing IT network.  Want to see what it looks like?  We couldn’t help but peek into Tim’s work area as he created his latest masterpiece! Check out our latest installation on our Facebook page.  Using VMT105 AV encoders from SVSi, each encoder (and decoder) is equipped with a standard Gigabit Ethernet (GigE) network connection.  In the cabinet depicted on Facebook (see IP ROUTED VIDEO), each VMT105 AV encoder or ‘black box’ represents an input source, such as a DVD, cable box, laptop or camera.  As well, each device has multiple GigE connections that allow for easy daisy-chaining.  A single source video stream might be daisy-chained to a large number of displays, easily supporting numerous event and conference rooms, corporate and retail digital signage and sports bar or hospitality content distribution.  Essentially, HD audio and video content, from anywhere to anywhere!  Call us today!  Century AV can help you capitalize on your existing AV installation using IP and traditional IT technology.

WHAT WE LEARN WHEN TALKING:  MAKING A MEETING A SUCCESS

Someone once said, “you never learn anything when you are talking”.  We all know meetings have a distinct purpose:  to communicate.  How do we know whether the message we have communicated has been heard?  Let alone understood?  How do we know where our people stand?  Learn and practice active listening.  How do we do this?  Don’t interrupt.  Make and hold eye contact.  Unfold your arms, showing you are open to receiving the message.  Listen to remember AND understand.  Nod periodically to show you are listening.  When the speaker is clearly finished, briefly share what you have heard without injecting your own feelings or thoughts.  Ask if you got it right.  Sound easy?  Try it with a friend.  It’s harder than you think, but well worth it.  It may become your go-to strategy that makes meetings more successful, not only from your perspective, but from the perspective of those who work for and with you.

it is easy being green:  how to extend your av investment

Century Audio Visual always searches for ways to support the AV Industry’s preservation of our planet’s ecological balance. A Projector Preventative Maintenance Program is part of that solution AND protects your investment. We clean projector air filters of dust and any other dust building up in the air and optical paths. Even the smallest amount of dust build up will increase the internal operating temperature, possibly decreasing the lifespan of the expensive projection lamp.  We'll also ensure that your A/V system is functioning as intended. Together, we can help reduce the volume of toxic lamps that enter our disposal system. Contact us today!  Ask for Danny Fraga, who will be pleased to take care of you, your equipment and our environment.

IP ROUTED VIDEO:  HOW COOL IS THIS??!!

IP routed video is supported by your existing IT network, combining long distance transmission of audio AND video.  Available at an affordable price, IP routed video allows any video device to be transmitted to any display device, simultaneously, or in any configuration.  Streaming and recording solutions also allow companies to leverage their existing video conferencing or other video technology infrastructure to be re-purposed as an in-house internet telecast studio.  The potential applications for this technology are endless, including classroom environments, training applications and message or meeting broadcasts (recorded or live) to a larger audience, to name a few.  Given the current trend for in-house production of informational material and more complex demands for telecommunication, we recommend IP routed video as technology in which to invest.

HOW CAN CENTURY AV SUPPORT YOUR IP ROUTED VIDEO NEEDS?

Century AV provides the design and hardware, programs the control system, as well as assists your IT department in planning for the deployment of your IP routed video system.  If you are contemplating running video streams over your IP network, be prepared for the potential complexity of this type of traffic.  Your existing network must be robust and flexible enough to withstand the bandwidth requirements of the system(s).  If this is not the case, Century AV will develop a network fully customized to your specific needs.  Your system will be designed to the amount of inputs (sources) and outputs (displays) which you have.   Contact us today!  Find out how Century AV can transform your existing environment to support your emerging video needs.

AV Interconnects Refined:  MORE news…hot off the Tech Savvy Press!

Remember last month’s article on AV inter-connectability challenges? CAT(x type) wiring, now also an AV mainstay wiring methodology, transmits AV signals in both short and long run installations. Cable end conversions such as baluns or small out-board boxes functioned as the extender method, but introduced an installation dilemma.  What did you do with the power supply, wire and small black boxes sitting in multiple areas of your meeting room?  One day, our AV Tech, Jason, came in with a decora style faceplate-box.  The box had an HDMI port that pulled power from the HDMI source wire.  Converting to a CAT(x) RJ45 connector on the back side, it seamlessly connected to the CAT(x) cable.  This box would change how we handle inter-connectability upgrade issues!   Now, the cable transitions neatly within a wall port faceplate, eliminating the need for outboard boxes! As your needs change or new AV signal transmission types emerge, simply change the type of faceplate converter/extender at each end of the CAT(x) cable. Stick with Century AV.  We keep a laser-like focus on future proofing your AV technology.

Mobile & Other New Technology:  IS YOUR Conference Room AV Ready?

Inter-connectability points for AV in your conference room are becoming a moving target based on the changing technology of manufacturers.  Smart phones and Ipads have ports on them.  The objective now among 15-20% of our clients is to pull a cable from the table port and plug it, seamlessly, into the mobile device.   Random sharing is rapidly becoming a part of our culture.  Where is the porting on YOUR table to interface with this technology?  As mobile technologies begin to surpass the usage of stationery computers, their technological strength as viable source devices for display use is also increasing.  Add to this new challenge the fact that technology interconnect and transmission technologies continue to change, such as notebooks moving from VGA to HDMI.  Without changing your technology to adapt to the changing transmission to and from your devices, your room can quickly become outdated.

CONVERTING CHALLENGE INTO OPPORTUNITY:  PARTNERING WITH YOU

Great minds think alike.  We know that you know the benefits of keeping current with technology.  Embracing mobile devices as content sources is introducing a new variety of problems for professional presenters.  Manufacturers have devised mobile devices with outputs and signal transmission types based on “consumer” or single user interaction with very short cable runs.   How does this impact you?  HDMI signals degrade quickly and fidelity is problematic, even at 30 feet.  The good news is that we can adapt your existing environment to meet your emerging needs.  External boxes can be added to boost or extend HDMI signal strength as well as the range of your HDMI cables.  If your AV integrated room is not HDMI capable, CAT5 (network/internet) cabling is a great solution.  CAT5 is a sustainable option and it can do anything with any signal.   The key is in using a little black box, hidden under the table, which decodes HDMI signals.  The box enables CAT5 transmission and then converts back to the original HDMI connector for continuity.  Down the road, boxes may change, but your wire will remain the same.  Given the staying power of CAT5, your initial investment will be well protected.

FLAT SCREEN DISPLAYS: THE “NEWER” OF THE “NEW”!

4K and OLED TV screens are the ‘newer’ displays being talked about among the technically savvy. If you have seen an OLED or 4K set in action, you will probably want one.  OLED, a display technology, and 4K Ultra HD, a display resolution, produce a better looking picture than you'll see on any of today's 1080p plasma or LCD sets.  On an OLED HDTV, colors pop like nothing you've seen before against a blacker than black background. You also get ultra-wide viewing angles. The display's fast response rate makes fast motion look fluid on the screen and 3D content looks amazing. The screens don't need a backlighting system, so they're the thinnest HDTV's on the planet.  A 4K TV's strength is simple sharpness. There are two times as many pixels packed into the display as there are on a 1080p set.  This quantity of pixels allows you to see more granular detail than you can on a 1080p HDTV. 4K and OLED sets, though costly, will significantly enhance your viewing experience.  Call or email us today to get details on products hitting the market throughout 2013.  Let us help you create inventive display solutions that will rock your world!

STAY AHEAD OF THE COMPETITION WITH VIDEO CONFERENCING

Technology is essential to enhancing the way our daily business is conducted.  We were thrilled to recently use a live feed from our Facebook page, sharing visual details with a new client on an installation completed just moments before.  We can help you increase efficiency, streamline your business process and continue to impress your clients by installing video conferencing.  Video conferencing enables collaboration between you, your team and your clients, from multiple locations, at a fraction of travel costs. It also helps to reduce your carbon footprint, which is becoming more and more important to business owners large and small.  Video conferencing is rapidly becoming the preferred method of communication.  Call Century AV for more information on how video conferencing can benefit you and enhance your meeting facilities!

SOCIAL MEDIA POWER PLAYS FOR EVENTS:

Social Media & Mobile Apps are dramatically changing how attendees experience events. Having a deep understanding of how to leverage both during the event life cycle will elevate your events. Century Audio Visual is happy to recommend a link to some resources that are an excellent place to start. Each one has actionable tips for how to harness the power of Social Media & Mobile Apps to take your events to the next level. Social Media has enormous potential to increase visibility and conversion for events. It enriches the live and remote attendee experience and builds loyalty. That’s what drives people to make attending your event a priority. Check out the event management software from global leader Cvent. They've developed numerous software tools for event and meeting planners, marketers and other professionals. Cvent software is used to plan events, find venues, manage membership data, create mobile apps, send surveys and develop strategic meetings management programs. Check out some of their free reference material at http://www.cvent.com/en/sem/ebook-bundle.shtml

ENHANCE YOUR WEB PRESENCE WITH VIDEO FROM YOUR EVENTS:

Events that use large screen presentations have always benefitted from the use of a video camera to “Imag” (image magnification) the presenter’s image at the lectern up onto the big screens. It gives every ‘seat paying’ attendee a clear view of the key activities and keeps action on the screens should there be a lapse in prepared content presentation. So why not take it a step further? Record the presentations, post-package them for short vignettes on your web site, insert them into blogs and social media posts, upload them to sharing sites such as YouTube and use them daily as support references within emails. Over 60% of all web traffic is now video. Websites with video are reported to be 500% more effective in closing the sale. Infomercials should be short, under 2 minutes and deliver a simple and concise message of strong informational value to the viewer. It can be hard to put really good video on the web if you try it yourself. Perhaps it’s not what you are trained to do consideration should be to outsource your video support.
