LASER DISPLAYS…  COMING TO A THEATRE NEAR YOU!:

A/V industry gurus are starting to believe that laser based display screens may soon become the new large display format leader. Prysm (www.prysm.com), a leader in this new field, has been exhibiting their new Laser Phosphor Display screens (LPD) at Asian and African trade shows to rave reviews. There are two key benefits of the laser displays. Due to the inherent nature of laser light, the projected image is far brighter and sharper than current LCD or plasma screens and of growing importance, power usage is far lower. A 50 inch TV screen projecting at a light level of 1000 lumens could be achieved with only 8W of laser power. A 50 foot cinema screen could be lit up with only 50W. The viewing angle is nearly 1800 and the tile seams are near invisible. They are currently concentrating on promoting the technology for large scale installations such as stage shows, concerts, advertising and outdoor screens. If LDP technology finds its way into consumer markets (and you know it will), you will hear more right here in “Tech Savvy”.

‘SAFE CITY MISSISSAUGA’ AWARDS CENTURY A/V IS A “HERO”:

The Hero Awards, sponsored by Bell, celebrates six Mississauga residents each year who have made extraordinary contributions to crime prevention in their community. Hero Award recipients are people who recognize that crime prevention is everyone’s business and who are passionate about making Mississauga safer. Crime prevention isn’t about catching criminals as much as it is about effecting social and environmental change, such that criminal activity never happens in the first place. On Nov. 9, Century Audio Visual will be awarded with the Harold G Shipp Business Hero Award for support to ‘Safe City Mississauga’, who, along with the University of Toronto Mississauga, will host the third annual Crime Prevention Conference. The conference gathers together people from a wide range of backgrounds to discuss best practices for crime prevention including police, government officials, crime prevention practitioners, and students. As our clients and in many cases, you being the Facility Manager for your business, we invite you to attend as our guests at this Conference. Please email your interest to Century Audio Visual and we will add your guest registration to the event on Nov. 9, 2012. http://safecitymississauga.on.ca/events/crime-prevention-conference/

DIGITAL SIGNAGE MADE EASY:

Digital Signage can take on many looks, depending on your concept of it, your purpose and intention for it as a tool and the budget at your disposal. It can be as simple as filling the screen of your prominently positioned flat screen with a cycle of slides such as Powerpoint or as information filled as watching a broadcast television news channel such as CP24. The latter is a widely used example of DS in waiting rooms, etc. The purist version of DS employs software to remotely feed & update a multi image format of information. If you are interested in jazzing up your foyer without an investment in specialized incoming “feeds” or software and its learning curve, then consider using a multi input, four image, 21 x 9 aspect ratio IPS-LCD screen. IPS stands for in-plane switching in a thin display that has two transistors for each pixel for better viewing angles than TFT-LCDs that use just one. This requires a more powerful backlight, which delivers more accurate colors, and allows the screen to be viewed from a wider angle. Feed it from a pc configured with a 4 output video card and you are in control of a multi – imaged DS screen with wide attention getting appeal. LG is bringing out a 27” and a 29” model this winter. As can be expected, the available sizes will grow quickly.

DETERMINE YOUR AV USE BEFORE BOOKING YOUR MEETING SPACE:

Audio Visual plays a very important role in your meeting or event! Century AV Tech’s can help ensure that the proposed meeting space “works” for the AV setup and production. There are many factors to be taken into consideration. Century AV would like to help simplify that process for you! Follow this link to Century’s “Event Planners AV Checklist” to help keep everything organized during the preparation of your event and to ensure nothing is overlooked. http://www.centuryav.com/docs/AVChecklist.pdf

KEEP YOUR PROJECTOR CLEAN:

Call Century to schedule a Preventative Maintenance cleaning at least annually to avoid the costly and damaging build-up of dirt and resulting heat. These elements can damage your projector over time and shorten lamp life. A small investment once a year to clean an item will pay dividends in prolonging the useful life of your equipment and put value back in your warranty. Century Audio Visual will provide a complete record of service performed and a recommended follow up procedure based on system usage factors.

Audio Visual Technology "News of Interest" #40 – Sept. 1, 2012

Regulations on Mass Notification Systems are Coming to Canada*

”Speech Intelligibility Speaker Specifications & Considerations”:

Dispersion Angle: Focused sound requires a speaker that has narrow dispersion angles defined by the 6dB attenuation point of the speaker when measured from the on axis response to the point off axis where the sound drops 6dB. This point determines the actual coverage pattern of the speaker in the horizontal and vertical axis. With narrow dispersion angles, the sound is directed to the audience plane and very little energy is directed towards the walls and ceilings. This helps reduce the excitation of the reverberant field and reduces the delayed reflections. Knowing this dispersion angle allows for proper speaker placement because we will match or overlap at these points.

Sensitivity: This figure expressed as 1 watt at 1 meter, (1W/1M) basically states that if the speaker receives one watt of power that the speaker will produce a certain amount of Sound Pressure (expressed in dB) at one meter away from the speaker on axis. The higher this figure, the less total wattage required in the total speaker load. Figures such as 90 dB and higher are the desirable values for this specification.

Max Power: How much final SPL (sound pressure level) is the speaker capable of? Determine the final SPL required at the audience plane and then check the Max Power Handling to see if after distance calculations, the required SPL can be achieved.

Doubling Power and Distance: As power is increased by a factor of two (double, 3 watts to 6 watts etc.) the SPL will increase by 3dB for every doubling. When doubling the distance from the one meter reference point, conventional single cone speakers will lose 6dB for every doubling. For line arrays this loss is less and can be approximately 3dB.

”Noise”:

• The degrading of the intelligibility of the message can be contributed by large spaces that support reverberant fields, delayed reflections, the difficult ability to focus the sound plus any ambient noise. These types of influences tend to mask the speech consonants which impart the meaning to many words in the English language. Noise is considered any signal that is not part of the original message.

• It is often stated that for a good system response the signal must be up to 25dB louder than the noise. This requires a good focused sound field and high levels of speaker handling power. Levels of this magnitude would probably require some sort of Ambient Noise Control to adjust the sound pressure levels (SPL) to the changing ambient noise.

• For areas that have well behaved acoustics or reverberation of less than 1.5 seconds, consideration is mostly given to ambient noise.

Mass Notification Systems are Coming to Canada! *

Mass Notification Systems are coming to Canada and the code requirements are now being determined. One area that will require close attention to detail will be the intelligibility of the installed speaker systems. Speech and alert signaling into large reverberant spaces, small areas and outdoor locations must deliver the message that is clearly understood above any difficult acoustic environments and ambient noise levels. Knowing the characteristics of the spaces and the expected or anticipated ambient noise will be critical in designing an intelligible system. These environment characteristics will determine the type of speaker and it’s characteristics that will allow for this intelligibility. The relationship between the message delivered and room acoustics plus ambient noise is called the Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR). There must be more signal than noise.

*Article reprinted from the TOA Canada Newsletter – A technical description of “Noise” and Speaker Specification considerations will follow in our next Be Tech Savvy.

Large LCD Screens vs. Projectors?  Are We At Another “AV Crossroads”?

The projector has long been the mainstay imaging device for meeting rooms. Flat screens have had applications in smaller meeting rooms; however, detailed activities such as spreadsheet analysis have been a challenge to view. As larger screens become more of a mainstream product, the cost difference between them and projectors has narrowed. Historically, meeting room imaging devices have changed as the economies of scale influence the ever decreasing cost of technology. Projectors typically require ceiling installation which requires specialized structural mounting, power & cabling methods, and varying installation costs due to factors such as drywall ceilings. Using an 80” LED LCD screen as an example, you can now justify the purchase, including installation, as a cost effective alternative to the projector. Proven benefits of the LCD screen include its’ life span and ease of installation. Also, consider the time and money saved by not having to replace projector lamps anymore! The built-in speakers in an LCD screen function well in a smaller room. In larger rooms though, the sound may seem distant and not room filling. As in a room installed with a projector, it is always advisable to install ceiling speakers to ensure the even distribution of sound throughout the room.

The AV and IT Merger Simplified!

Organizational and business demands on technological tools and processes to enhance operations, increase productivity, revenues and profits, have removed all operational barriers between the disciplines of AV and IT. No longer can one operate without the other and to operate in concert as the AVIT department within an organization is a fact in today’s business structure. We choose this acronym as it best describes the central elements of Audio, Visual and Information as discrete Technologies under a very broad umbrella of user technical needs.  With such internal reliance on AVIT resources, it positions this 21st century business unit to rely upon its’ service supplier as a vested partner and business advisor. In turn, todays AVIT service supplier has evolved into a technical general contractor acting as the key contact point for this mixed bag of managed services. From project design through to the billing process, todays AVIT contractor not only takes ownership in the client project, they also partner in its success.

AV and IT combined as an All-In-One Quote from Century AV!

Just about all Audio Visual technology is integrated with Information Technology systems.  Therefore, IT upgrades or additions for AV integration must be taken into consideration when planning your AV project.  Century provides IT installation and service in conjunction with your AV requirements.  The turnkey approach to your AV System Integration by the same technicians will save time and money, making the project implementation task easier.

Flexible OLED Display Products Will Be Available By Year End!

The introduction of OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diode) technology makes it possible to create very thin display products that are bendable and flexible. PLUS... because these displays will not be made of glass, they will be more durable and virtually shatter-proof! Being so thin and flexible, a video sign could be wrapped around a pillar or the curved surface of your reception counter for example. Just imagine a video playing on the side of a bus! Samsung Electronics said recently that it plans to launch products with flexible OLED panels by the end of this year. They will start with mobile phones, probably with curved OLED displays that will not be bendable. This will be followed by tablets and other portable devices. Just imagine! One day you could own a cell phone with a large “roll out” display screen! Products are being tested that can roll onto a thin spool while still playing! OLED’s can also be used to make white lighting panels. OLEDs provide great area lighting and can be created in different shapes. Several companies are working towards introducing flexible OLEDs including Samsung, Sony, AUO, Toshiba LG and more! So you will have lots of products to choose from in the near future!

Video is the challenge for business networks in 2012! Can Yours Handle It?

Video, especially live video conferencing is rapidly becoming the preferred method of communication according to experts at a recent round table discussion about factors driving change to corporate networks. Live web conferencing is a solution that brings people together from multiple locations to share information with multiple users over the Internet. The speed and efficiency of today’s Internet along with the development of more intuitive products have made this technology an essential part of daily business activities, and will enhance the way business is conducted. Companies are rapidly looking at HD video options, interactive options, and the possibility of corporate mobility options via Android or Apple's tablet and smartphone devices. It was noted that 92% of Fortune 500 companies are now testing tablets in their organizations. Companies need to look at their network infrastructure and the added burden this will place on networks as video applications become more sophisticated. They will need to focus on preparing for the era of mass video communication as a native technology and build it into every facet of their business. At Century AV, we have noticed an increasing trend towards projects related to upgrading Video equipment.

More AV Tips to Help Organize Your Next Meeting or Event!

In our last issue we talked about how important Audio Visual is to your meeting or event! Our Century AV tech will ensure that the proposed meeting space will accommodate AV setup and production, lighting (if required) and take into consideration AV hazards like low ceilings and reflective windows or mirrors that might interfere with the effect of your presentation.  We also mentioned creating an “Event AV Checklist” to help keep everything organized during the preparation of your event and to ensure nothing is overlooked. We are still going to deliver but it’s taking a bit longer than we expected to get it just right! We’re taking the extra time to give a more polished, user friendly checklist to help make event planning easier, less stressful and help you deliver a more professional product. We’ll share it in the next issue of Be Tech Savvy!

Welcome to the Next Generation of Projectors!

Century AV introduced you to mercury free LED projectors in issue #29 last October. Now we are introducing LED projectors with up to 4000 lumen lamp power! Because this new technology is mercury free, you can boost your companies green credentials and help meet corporate environmental targets. With a life time of up to 20,000 hours, this light source gives you up to 10,000 two-hour presentations without an expensive lamp replacement, and minimal power consumption will lower your energy costs! You can now achieve brilliant colour reproduction, high light output, even in daylight, with an environmentally friendly, cost effective unit. Through the development of this innovative new lighting technology, it’s now possible to combine all three attributes into a single projector. Economical, ecological and high brightness! Truly a match made in AV heaven!!

AV Tips to Help Organize Your Next Meeting or Event!

When planning any meeting or event, audio visual equipment and services must be a high priority to ensure your gathering is both compelling and engaging for your audience! Much of this will depend on the presenter and the content of the program. Professional sound, visuals and lighting will play a very important part in the overall delivery and how memorable your event will be! Audio Visual equipment can range from something as simple as a flip chart to a highly technical video conference or presentation. Your very first step, even before booking the venue, should be to contact Century AV for assistance.  Our techs will help to ensure the layout of the space is compatible for AV set up and function and has the high speed internet capabilities to deliver your product, for example, video conferencing will have a clear crisp image with no lag time or distortion!  Century AV is in the process of creating a helpful planning guide to assist you in all stages leading up to the event. We’ll share it with our readers in the next issue of Be Tech Savvy!

It’s Time to Consider Updating Your Current AV System!

Have you had a really good look at the Audio Visual system in your meeting area lately? Is your current system cost effective? Is it set up for sound or the speed that is required to view videos or a live streaming of an event? Technology is advancing by leaps and bounds every day and the computer has grown into a multi-dimensional presentation tool. Simple enhancements will create more effective room use for workshops, video conference calls and training such as WHMIS.
